Playing together in the first three months

In the first weeks, play does not look like play. There are no toys to master and no rules to follow. Mostly it is two people looking at each other, and one of them narrating.

If you have five awake and calm minutes, that is a full session. If you do not have them today, nothing is lost.

Start with your face

Hold your baby about a forearm’s length away and let them settle on your face. Move slowly to one side, then the other. Some babies follow, some look away after a moment. Both are fine — looking away is usually a sign they have had enough for now.

Talk through the ordinary

Changing, dressing, carrying the laundry basket — say what is happening as you do it. You do not need a special voice or a script. Pausing after a sentence, as though waiting for an answer, turns it into something closer to a conversation.

Most of what a newborn wants from play is your attention, close up and unhurried.

Let them lie on their front, briefly

On a firm surface, awake and watched, a minute or two is plenty at first. It is easier if you lie down at their level so there is something to look at. If it turns into crying, stop and try again another day.

Keep the props simple

A soft cloth to pull slowly across their line of sight. A rattle shaken once, to the left, then once to the right. Your own finger for them to hold. Nothing needs buying.

Read the pauses

Babies at this age take breaks often. Turning the head away, yawning, spreading the fingers wide — these usually mean “enough for now”. Stopping early and coming back later works better than pushing on.

There is no schedule to keep up with here. Some days you will play three times; some days not at all, and that is a normal week.
